Zoe Marie Federeoff è un’affermata compositrice ed una cantante di talento, cofondatrice della band di fama internazionale Catalyst Crime, musicista militante negli Atrocity e nel The Vivaldi Metal Project, e, recentissimamente, pure new entry nientepopodimeno che nei Cradle Of Filth.
Basta un ascolto per essere stregati dalla sua voce soave e sicura di sè.
E anche dal suo amore per la musica, la sua passione per il pianoforte e la composizione, la sua creatività ed inventiva.

Ciao Zoe! Benvenuta a Metal Hammer! E’ un piacere averti qui. Ti anticipo già che i nostri lettori non vedono l’ora di conoscerti meglio. Come stai? Che si dice in Arizona?
“Grazie mille! Anche per me è un piacere conoscervi! In questo periodo fa abbastanza caldo qui in Arizona- un bel 48 gradi Celsius la scorsa settimana!- ma sopravviviamo bevendoci qualche margarita ghiacciato”.
Bene a proposito…rinfrescaci la memoria…sei la cofondatrice dei Catalyst Crime insieme a Gerit Lamm, batterista degli Xandria, per cui canti e componi, sei pure la tastiera dei Cradle Of Filth…hai fatto del tuo talento la tua arte e della tua passione la tua professione, vorremmo sapere come è decollata esattamente la tua avventura nell’ambiente musicale, ma soprattutto…Come hai iniziato a cantare?
“Grazie per le belle parole. Secondo i miei genitori ho iniziato a cantare sin da quando ero nella culla, ma onestamente non mi sono mai sentita davvero a “casa” considerando le mia voce e le aspirazioni musicali fino a quando mio padre non mi ha fatto conoscere il metal. Mi ha fatto ascoltare i miei primi album metal da bambina (Iron Maiden- ‘Powerslave’ e Fates Warning- ‘No Exit as I recall’) e mi sono sentita catturata. Più tardi ho scoperto voci pulite femminili nel metal per merito di band come Epica e Nightwish e la passione è da allora aumentata”.
Possiamo definire i Catalyst Crime come una “band metal cinematografica con i paesaggi epici del metal sinfonico, l’intensità oscura del death metal e momenti di spirito libero del progressive metal…” è corretto?
Come e quando è nato il progetto Catalyst Crime?
“Penso che sia una descrizione abbastanza accurata, anche se naturalmente l’ulteriore evoluzione sta accadendo con la nostra prossima versione del secondo anno. Catalyst Crime è stato creato da me e Gerit Lamm, ex componente di Xandria. Abbiamo aggiunto Jonah Weingarten di Pyramaze e Kaelen Sarakinis da uno dei miei progetti precedenti, Insatia. La scelta del bassista è ricaduta spontaneamente su mio padre dato che è un musicista eccezionale con cui ho sempre voluto lavorare. Infine abbiamo aggiunto l’incredibile Chena Ohanele…è stata un’avventura creare musica con questo team internazionale!”
A proposito di tuo padre, nonchè bassista della tua band appunto, penso che probabilmente il tuo amore per la musica sia stato infuso anche per merito suo… Com’è suonarci insieme?
“Suonare con lui e creare musica con lui è stato davvero un sogno. Gli devo tutto musicalmente parlando e la nostra chimica e i gusti condivisi entrano davvero in gioco, specialmente in questo prossimo album inedito”.
Quale artista ti ispira maggiormente all’interno del metal?
“Ce ne sono così tanti. Lord of the Lost è un grande per me, sono così autentici come musicisti e persone. Dovrei anche elencare Amorphis, Epica, Wintersun (anche se voglio il mio dannato album ‘Time II’), Nightwish, Dark Tranquility, Jinjer, e naturalmente anche Cradle of Filth. Penso che se elencassi le band a seconda di ogni influenza che ho avuto nella mia vita dovremmo star qui ore”.
Dove trai ispirazione nel comporre la tua musica?
“Semplicemente mi vengono in mente tante cose. C’è sempre una melodia all’interno del mio cervello. A volte diventa davvero interessante e devo registrarla. A volte diventa un’intera canzone, apparentemente da sola. Non posso davvero dire di avere una formula, aspetto solo che la mia testa faccia qualcosa e la seguo. C’è un aggancio nel prossimo album dei Cradle of Filth che mi è letteralmente entrato dentro la prima volta che ho incontrato personalmente la band, e ho dovuto correre nella mia stanza d’albergo per registrarlo”.
Come ti hanno scoperta i Cradle Of Filth l’anno scorso?
“Conoscevo persone nel campo della produzione che mi hanno raccomandato questo posto quando la posizione lavorativa si sarebbe aperta. Sarò sempre grata che queste persone abbiano pronunciato il mio nome nel giusto momento”.
Come è girare in tour con loro? Quali sono le mete più belle verso cui la musica ti ha accompagnato?
“Adoro andare in tour con loro, sono persone fantastiche e musicisti di talento, e mi sto divertendo un mondo. Sono anche molto onorata che mi abbiano permesso di scrivere insieme il prossimo album dei Cradle of Filth. E ‘un’esperienza incredibile e allo stesso tempo umiliante perché dai, sono i Cradle of Filth e io sono solo Zoë Federoff. Com’è potuto succedere?
Per quanto riguarda la seconda domanda…è difficile rispondere visto che ho sempre viaggiato molto, anche prima di Cradle of Filth e Catalyst Crime, ma vi dirò che è stato davvero un momento speciale cantare sul palco dei 70.000 Tons of Metal con Atrocity e il palco del John Smith Festival con Cradle of Filth nell’ultimo anno. Entrambi gli stage erano nella mia bucket list”.
Qual è il tuo rapporto con la musica Black Metal?
“Oltre ai Cradle nell’ambito del black mi piacciono molto i Carach Angren. Compositori brillanti privi di un singolo album senza carattere”.
Quando non stai cantando e non sei alla tastiera, dove hai più probabilità di essere?
“A casa con mia figlia mentre la coccolo e le leggo un libro”.
Qualche progetto per il futuro?
“Beh, abbiamo due grandi tour in arrivo per Cradle prima della fine dell’anno, in America Latina e negli Stati Uniti e con Catalyst Crime stiamo registrando il nostro secondo lavoro…Sono così impegnata in questo periodo ma grazie a Dio si parla di musica, ciò che amo davvero. Non posso lamentarmi e sono grata che la mia vita sia così”.

Hello Zoe!Welcome to Metal Hammer Italian webzine, nice to meet you.How are you? How are things going in Arizona?
Thanks and great to meet you as well! Things are pretty hot here in Arizona- it was 48 degrees Celsius last week! But we are surviving with ice cold margaritas like always.
You are a talented vocalist and a composer, you cofounded international symphonic metal band Catalyst Crime with Xandria drummer Gerit Lamm, you guested for numerous bands including Atrocity and The Vivaldi Metal Project…and, since 2022, you play with Cradle Of Filth band.How exactly did your adventure in the music environment take off? How did you start singing?
Thank you for the kind words. I have been singing since I was in the cradle according to my parents, but I didn’t really feel like I found a “home” for my voice and musical aspirations until my father introduced me to metal. He handed me my first metal albums as a kid (Iron Maiden- Powerslave and Fates Warning- No Exit as I recall) and I was hooked. Later on I found clean female vocals in metal via bands like Epica and Nightwish and the passion only grew from there.
We can say that Catalyst Crime is a “cinematic symphonic metal band with the epic soundscapes of symphonic metal, the dark intensity of death metal, and moments of free spirited progressive metal…” is it correct?How and when Catalyst Crime was born?
I think that’s a fairly accurate description although of course further evolution is happening with our upcoming sophomore release. Catalyst Crime was created by myself and Gerit Lamm, formerly of Xandria. We added Jonah Weingarten of Pyramaze and Kaelen Sarakinis from one of my earlier projects, Insatia. My dad was a natural choice for bassist since he’s an outstanding musician who I’ve always wanted to work with. Lastly we added the incredible Chena Ohanele and it’s been quite an adventure creating music with this international team.
I think that probably your love for music was infused also by your own dad as well…How is playing with him?
Playing with him and creating music with him has been a dream come true, really. I owe him everything musically speaking and our chemistry and shared tastes really comes into play, especially on this next unreleased album.
Which artist inspires you mostly in metal music?
Man there’s so many. Lord of the Lost is a big one for me, they’re just so authentic as musicians and people. I’d have to also list Amorphis, Epica, Wintersun (Though I want my damn Time II album), Nightwish, Dark Tranquility, Jinjer, and of course Cradle of Filth as well. I think if I listed every influence I had this would take hours.
How do you write your own music? How does it work?I mean…where do you get your inspiration?
Stuff just pops into my head. There’s constantly a melody playing in my brain. Sometimes it gets really interesting and I have to record it. Sometimes it becomes a whole song, seemingly by itself. I can’t really say I have a formula, I just wait for my brain to do something and I follow it. There’s a hook on the upcoming Cradle of Filth album that literally popped into my head the first time I met the band in person, and I had to run off to my hotel room to record it.
How were you discovered by Cradle Of Filth last year?
I knew people in their production camp who recommended me when the job position opening up. I am forever grateful that these people spoke my name when it mattered.
How is touring with them? Where have some of your favorite places that your music has taken you?
I love touring with them, they’re great and talented people and I’m having the time of my life. I also really feel honored they’ve let me co-write the next Cradle of Filth album with them. It’s such an amazing and humbling experience because come on- it’s Cradle of Filth and I’m just Zoë Federoff. How did this happen?
My favorite place music has taken me? That’s a hard question to answer since I’ve always traveled a lot, even before Cradle of Filth and Catalyst Crime, but I will say it was really special to sing on the 70,000 Tons of Metal stage with Atrocity and the John Smith Festival stage with Cradle of Filth in the past year. Both stages were huge bucket list items for me.
What is your relationship with Black Metal music?
Besides Cradle which of course plays with the black metal spectrum at times, I really enjoy Carach Angren. Absolutely brilliant writers without a single lackluster album.
When you’re not singing and playing your keyboard, where are you most likely to be?
Home with my daughter, cuddling and reading a book to her.
What does the future look like from here for you? What are your plans now?
Well, we have two big tours coming up for Cradle before the end of the year- Latin America and the US- and Catalyst Crime is recording our sophomore release in the meantime. I’m so booked right now and so busy, but thank god it’s all music- what I truly love. I can’t complain and I’m grateful life looks like this.
